All Ireland Sports Finals - 29th June 2002, St. Brendans College, Killarney
Yes it was Final's Day and with all the training, organising and Team selections done it was now a case of go out and do your BEST.
From early morning they began to stream through the College Gates, egar for the competitions to start. Some of the teams had travelled down the night before while others undertook their Journey's in the EARLY hours of the Saturday morning. All with the same aim to do themselves, their Centres and their Province's PROUD.
With the Bells of the Angelus still ringing in our ears Registration began, one by one Areas and Teams were recorded and the next question on everyone's lips was "Who do we play and when?". Programmes were purchased and answers found.
12:30 .... came around and with most of teams registred the Competition's began. The badmintion was held in the Gym under the Direction of Anne and Theresa Mulkeen, while the Basketball was managed by Kerry Area IBA Board Rep and Referee Majella Ahern assisted by Christine Buckley, with the Soccer and Gaelic Football run by Seamus Murphy and the Kerry Pioneer President Mary B. Teehan.
While the participants were put through their various rounds and competition's, their supporters took advantage of the Tea and Sandwiches aswell as Soft Drinks, Chocolate or Taytos provided by the Pioneer's of the Ross Diocese. Meanwhile Barra Cogan did his best to keep everyone Inform aswell as Imformed !
Unfortunatly the RAIN began to fall which forced the Basketball offical's to call a 'Time Out' on the games as it was to dangerous to continue play on the Outside Courts. It was decided to Re-start the games indoors once the Badmintion competitions were completed meanwhile on the Sports field's it was business as usual.
Shortly after 4 o'clock it was Final's time for most of the Competitions so the presentation team of the President of the PTAA Mr. Sean Coil and the National Youth Council Chairperson Ms. Brenda Lynch were put on stand-by. One after another Loud cheers were heard all around the grounds echoing off the wall's of St. Mary's Catherdal near-by.
With Final whistle's blowing in the different level's of the competion the Specially commisioned Gold and Silver medals were presented by Sean and Brenda to the respective placed team's and as if by majic the Sun came out to make the most of their wonderful achievement.
Seven o'clock came and with it, the Final of Final Whistle's. The last presentation of meadal's were made by Ms. Brenda Lynch who as she had with the previous ones Congratulated the team's and their coaches on the wonderful achievement and thanked them for their commitment to the Assocation and for making the journey to Killarney for the day's Events.
With the Competions and presentations over it was time to reflect on the Day and for the team's to start planning for next year.
While for this Year's organisers it was time to return the venue to the way they found it ealier that day and after all the Phone call's, Letter writing and Late night planning for this year's Sports Final's it was time to try and return to Normal.
In conclusion The Munster Youth Development Group and The Kerry Pioneer Diocesian Council wish to Thank all those who attended the day's Event for their Co-operation and patience throughout. Thank You also to all who helped Referee the different competions and to anyone who helped in anyway to make the day so smooth running and successful.
